First thing, this was put together early in the morning on March 22 using information from www.killedbypolice.net. This passes no judgment on guilt or innocence, just a full list. Second thing, this not include people like Travon Martin or Jordan Davis, who were killed by “stand your ground” laws by civilians. This also does not include kids like Lennon Lacy who found hanging from a swing set in North Carolina in what looks like a lynching. I also did not include anything pre-2014 since the whole “black lives matter” started. This by far is not a complete list.

However, this list is important. Sure Michael Brown, Eric Garner and Tamir Rice just get the headlines, but every name needs to be remembered.

Never forget, Walter Scott was a father of four, a former Coast Guard, and engaged to be married. Remember him as more than a blur of blue or a hashtag. Uplift his name. Learn his story. #staywoke #farfromover

I was always hungry for love. Just once, I wanted to know what it was like to get my fill of it — to be fed so much love I couldn’t take any more. Just once.

Preach

i agree with his even though he needed to calm the fuck down during most of this rant

why’d he need to calm?

him telling the interviewers to shut up so he could talk rubbed me the wrong way, personally.  i agree that we should all be empowered to be “bosses” but i didn’t like how belittling he was of people who don’t navigate the world that way, if that makes sense? not everyone can be a “boss” and i don’t think everyone necessarily has to. i liked his use of phrases like “i’m not a boss, i’m giving people opportunities” but like…idk, i get what he was trying to say in the larger sense but i feel it also diminishes the work and dedication of people who are not “bosses,”

no that makes sense. not every one can be or wants to be bosses and being condescending is not cool. were the interviewers interrupting him tho?

i don’t think they were interrupting him, they were just trying to debate/get a word in edgewise and he was definitely not having it. he was heated!

ahh. i guess this has been sitting on him heavy for a while.

They invited him. Shit they know dame they know what it is, nobody in there should have been too hurt

Police Killed More Than 100 People In March

In March alone, 111 people died during police encounters — 36 more than last month. As in the past, numerous incidents were spurred by violent threats from suspects, and two officers were shot in Ferguson during a peaceful protest. However, the deaths follow a national pattern: suspects were mostly people of color, mentally ill, or both.

Maki Oh: Fall 15/16

Maki Oh’s Autumn Winter 15\16 collection explores the idea of adopted identities as result of West Africa’s long history with cultural appropriation. It is an idea that has spun through all Maki Oh collections. Dutch Wax lends itself as the starting point of this research.

“As an advocate for all things truly African, Maki Oh uses true African textiles like Adire, Aso-oke, Akwa Ocha, Oja and more to continue to illustrate to the world (and Africans) that we have desirable, couture quality local textiles. Ankara fabric (Dutch Wax) does not have it’s origins in Africa. It is imported from Holland, India, Turkey, China and even England. But the world, and even some Africans think this fabric is African. Holland’s Vlisco’s current website proudly states “VLISCO HAS BEEN ROMANCING THE MEN AND WOMEN OF CENTRAL AND WEST AFRICA FOR ALMOST 170 YEARS AND HAS BEEN EMBRACED AS THE VERY FABRIC OF LIFE IN MANY SOCIETIES.”

This season, Maki Oh dissects the fascination and perception of these fabrics as African, along with other concepts that have been imported from other continents and have found home in West Africa. The idea of the African mermaid, Mami Wata is of particular interest, as it originated from a photograph of a Samoan snake charmer that appeared on the coasts of Nigeria in 1887. This image of a beautiful, long-haired woman holding a snake captured the imagination of West African indigenes who then projected meaning and symbolism onto the photograph, forming a powerful cultural myth around it. This is how simply and astonishingly the idea of Mami Wata was formed.
